Should I Stick to Stitching?

Here is my attempt at painting first time ever, I found the time this weekend. Should I sand and start over? Would you hang this in your house? Be honest...lol..

Heather...honestly I would use a
stencil...because my handwritten painting is horrible...but that is only because I am a perfectionist!
I like that color you used on the frame...what color is that? My colonial red is way to red for my taste, and I like the way yours turned out!

Hi Heather...Just found your blog and wanted to offer you a tip or two from someone who struggles with painting letters sometimes :o)
You could use a stencil if you had one, or you could pick a good font that you like, print the words on the computer, and use a piece of carbon paper to trace the words on. You may not have any...I have one piece and have used it for years! That will give you a good guide to fill in. Or trace the words onto a file folder by holding them up to a window, then cut them out with a sharp knife. Then you can trace them onto the wood w/a pencil. If all else fails...paint markers are awesome! They don't always come in the awesome prim colors we love, but maybe Michaels or AC Moore have better colors. I also like to 'neaten' up the edges of painted words by drawing around with a black sharpie sometimes. Good luck!

Hello Heather; Well for you first time it is not too bad. But I use a stencil, I am not good a free hand painting letters. And stencil alphabets come in so many different shapes and styles. Love the colors you used.

I think it turned out pretty good for free hand. I usually print mine of the computer and then cut out the letters and uase the paper as a stencil. I'm just no good at writting it myself.

Heather,
It's primitive so it would work. However, I know from many years of painting and crafting, if you're not happy with it, it doesn't matter what anyone else says!

I don't use stencils...I hate them. I have issues with them, always end up with globs and such. Not to mention, the cost and you can only find certain sayings in certain fonts. If you learn to do it by hand, you can paint anything, in any font on any size of item. :)

What size of brush are you using? Use a really small one. Get used to the idea that the first coat ain't going to be enough. You will want to go back and darken and touch up again or maybe even a third time.

Did you free hand or write out what you wanted? I used to use pencil but honestly chalk is the best! If you don't get things space the way you want, it wipes right off and you won't see the lines once it's painted like you do with pencil.

Once you get everything painted on, touch up. I almost always do a base coat and don't start with something the way it is...reason being that you can go back with that base coat and clean up around your words. If you make a mistake...it's gone!

With practice, you'll get it. It takes time!

Oh, and if you want to cheat...use a paint pen :)

That is the great thing about Prim - it isn't supposed to be perfect! I can't paint unless I use stencils though.
